Captives of the Fern Queen is about twelve-and-a-half-year-old Janna, princess of the Kingdom of Mount Pasture, who believes that the old stories about high home animals and the evil Fern Queen are real. Unfortunately, the other children don’t. They laugh at her; her parents scold her, and she hides in a rage, only to fall through a mound of dirt into a hidden tunnel.
That’s embarrassing enough, but after she makes it through the tunnel, she falls down a waterfall in front of a princess and prince from other kingdoms. They share experiences, though Janna doesn’t tell them she met one of the Maker’s high home lizards at the end of the tunnel. These new friends might laugh at her too.
Before she can change her mind, the Fern Queen captures all three of them. The queen works them hard during the day, locks them in a room at night, and doesn’t feed them enough. Then Janna’s father shows up in disguise, hoping to rescue her, and a bad situation gets worse.
