Minor characters add a lot to a story.
For instance, in Captives of the Fern Queen, Janna’s mom and dad both have irritating habits. King Luff has his mind on other things half the time and doesn’t hear what Janna is saying. Queen Berta has her mind on cooking big meals that have all three members of the family overweight.
However, Luff goes after Janna when she’s captured. He becomes a captive himself but his love is obvious. Berta is so kind and warm-hearted, she can’t bear to kick Janna’s new friend, Cook, out of her kitchen. The resulting competition is hilarious.
They may be minor characters, but their irritating quirks and praiseworthy virtues add depth and humor to the story.
